Brown Shipley: Providing comprehensive wealth solutions across the UK

Andrew ButlerCassar, Head of London office, explains how – as a regulated bank – Brown Shipley is able to combine financial planning, investment management and lending to offer clients a truly comprehensive wealth solution.

What, in brief, is Brown Shipley’s history and how does it stand now in terms of its UK presence and client base?

Andrew: Our history can be traced back over 200 years, to 1810. Whilst the nature of our business may have evolved since then, our focus on building long-term relationships with our clients, underpinned by trust, hasn’t.

Today we deliver a comprehensive wealth management service, drawing upon our core services of wealth planning, investment management and lending, from each of our six UK offices (Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds, London, Manchester and Nottingham).

Who is the typical client of Brown Shipley? What is their stage of life and what are they trying to achieve with their wealth?

Andrew: Our clients are typically high net worth individuals and families, and a number are, or have been, successful business-owners.  They require ongoing support in preserving and growing their wealth, which isn’t solely limited to where to invest their money.  Considerations such as how and when to pass wealth on to their next generation are typically prevalent amongst many of our clients, whether they are at the accumulation or decumulation stage of their lives.

Our core offering brings together our wealth planning and investment management services; this ensures each client has a tailored plan for their wealth which helps our clients make decisions important to them.

How would you describe Brown Shipley’s investment ethos and risk management approach? Does the firm have expertise in any particular areas of investment?

Andrew: We aim to produce sustainable investment performance for our clients, actively seeking to capture value and reduce risk through diversification across international markets and multiple asset classes.

We draw upon our in-depth experience and expertise of investment analysis and portfolio management in advising our clients on their specific investment needs.  Our clients can have a dedicated wealth planning adviser and investment manager who work in close consultation with them to provide a comprehensive and bespoke solution to their specific needs and aspirations. This involves obtaining a deep understanding of clients’ long-term goals, financial objectives and risk appetite to create the most appropriate investment and asset allocation strategy for them.

How does Brown Shipley go about devising investment strategies and building portfolios which suit each individual client’s risk-profile and financial goals?

Andrew: We take the time to get to know and understand our clients’ circumstances and objectives. By taking the time to listen before planning we are able to tailor their investment strategy and portfolio according to these circumstances and objectives.

At the core, we engage with our clients to fully understand how they want to reach their objectives, the risk they are willing and able to take, and any specific personal investment constraints they wish to address. With this information we then construct a personalised portfolio keenly positioned to deliver the best possible outcome.

How would you describe Brown Shipley’s approach to servicing and communicating with clients?

Andrew: Our service is centred on providing the client a great experience and being able to provide specialist advice on the extensive range of services we offer. To this end, every client has an adviser that leads on the management of the client relationship and has direct access to in-house specialists from our core services including wealth planning advisers, investment managers or lending specialists, who can all bring the required expertise in meeting our clients’ needs.  Regular review meetings are held to ensure the plan we have for our clients’ wealth can evolve as their needs and circumstances change.

We always aim to meet our clients face-to-face when initiating any relationship. From then on, our communication methods are based around what is most preferable and convenient for the client themselves.

How does Brown Shipley help clients engage more effectively with the management of their wealth? Do you help clients with investment education and research, for example?

Andrew: One of our strengths is delivering the services our clients’ need and working with them to help realise their life goals, not just their wealth goals. At every stage of the relationship we ensure the client understands the services we recommend, the rationale behind them and how this fits into their overall goals. We have a range of specialists who are happy to provide the relevant education and research to ensure the client feels comfortable with their decisions before taking them.

Our services also assist in the transfer of wealth to our clients’ next generations and therefore we will work with our clients to identify suitable opportunities to engage with their dependants in order to involve them in the management of their overall wealth.

What else is distinctive about Brown Shipley, either in terms of its investment process, corporate ethos or its manner of servicing clients?

Andrew: We are a pure-play private client wealth manager providing wealth planning and investment management advice and services; but as a regulated bank we are also able to offer banking and lending facilities to our clients.  We are solely focused on these activities in order to build strong and long-term relationships with our clients.

Furthermore, we are a fully-owned subsidiary of KBL European Private Bankers, a network of private banks and wealth managers operating in 50 cities across Europe and managing a combined total of €65bn of assets.  This provides us with additional scale and capability that many similar sized competitors in the UK don’t have.
